Theory of Karaoke Lesson 9: Work the Mic Right
Jason Burchard
When it comes to using the microphone, someone might think you were crazy
if you asked for instructions on how to use it. You shouldn’t have to go to the
extreme of buying the next copy of “Microphones for Dummies”, but your
performances can improve if you understand how to best use the microphone.
There are pretty much three things to learn about using the microphone--
handling, volume and placement.
The way you hold the microphone can change the way you sound. The best
way to hold the mic is to hold lightly with the tips of all your fingers on one
hand, except the pinky, at about the very middle of the stem. Grabbing, squeezing, cupping and other common used methods can distort the sound.
The other two things to know go together. Knowing the volume level of the
music and vocals can help you to adjust how close to hold the microphone.
When you first hear the music and start singing, listen closely to judge how soft or loud you are coming through. If you are too soft, hold the mic closer but never touching your lips (gross). If you are too loud, move the mic away from you. During certain parts of songs, you can move the mic closer or away to fit the part. If you have an almost screaming part, do everyone a favor and move
the mic the right distance far enough away to hear you and understand, but not
too close to blow out everyone’s ear drums. Now, take these simple lessons
about the microphone and try them out. Soon you will understand that ‘working
the mic right’ does make a difference. Now, go give it a shot!
