Theory of Karaoke Lesson 6: More Than "Fun"
- Jason Burchard

Karaoke is more than just for fun. People always say that karaoke is just for fun and that it doesn’t matter if you are good or not. I agree to an extent, but I also disagree.

I agree karaoke is mostly just for fun. As an audience member, it is helpful to understand that most people sing karaoke just to have a good time and relieve stress. As an audience member, you need to understand that not everyone who gets up to sing is going to impress you— nor is that their purpose. As a singer, you can be comforted by this realization that the karaoke audience is not there for only your performance and to judge you. Don’t be nervous about what other people will think.

Now, I did say that I also disagree with the ‘karaoke is just for fun’ line. How can I do that? I just got through stating that the audience mostly understands karaoke is for fun. Karaoke can go beyond entertainment. If you have been reading this and the other “Theory of Karaoke” articles, you have been learning. This education and your practice singing are like karaoke class. Think of it as such only if you really want it to be. Karaoke can help you to become a better singer.

Karaoke singing with practice and an open mind can help you to become a better singer. You can understand your voice. You can learn a wide variety of songs. With time, you can learn all sorts of things that can develop your singing ability.

You know where I’m going with this, don’t you? Karaoke can be your self-education in singing. If you want to be the next American Idol, or a singer or artist by other means, karaoke is a good place to start. You can learn a lot of the necessary skills it will take to be successful. You can even grow your persona and become discovered while singing. If you sing in contests, you can win money or other prizes. Often, karaoke contest prizes include recording sessions and deals.

Now, you may be wondering why this lesson isn’t like the other lessons. This lesson isn’t one that you can practice or get involved in like the previous lessons. This is more of a lesson in understanding. You should take the advice to help you become more comfortable on stage while you better understand your general perception, and your audience’s perception of karaoke’s purpose.
