Karaoke Tips
Create a songbook -
Get a small binder and put the lyrics to some of your favorite songs
to sing inside. You can take this with you when you go karaoke or
even on long commutes. Look at it on lunch breaks at work. The
more you study the lyrics, the more likely you’ll memorize the
songs. You might get so good at some songs that you won’t have to
look at the screen anymore.
Practice -
Practice at home the songs you’ll be singing that night. On the same
hand, don’t practice too much. It’s too easy to get excited and keep
practicing. But, once you sing six or more songs, your voice quality
could start to diminish.
Understand your flaws -
If you must do a song that you can’t do perfectly, at least know
where your weakness is. Practice on how to overcome or minimize
the weakness. There are a lot of songs that are easy to sing most of
the way except in one or two spots.
Bring friends -
Bringing friends will help put you at ease and build your confidence.
If you don’t do so great, they’ll at least make you feel a little better.
Chat with friends about more than just the karaoke. Talk about other
things before you sing and it will keep you from worrying about
when you’re coming up.
Relax -
Do what you must to relax before your turn comes up. You might
want to go outside to get fresh air or to go in the bathroom for some
privacy and to psyche yourself up.
Don’t get drunk -
There’s no better way to bomb and make a complete fool of yourself
than to get drunk and then try to sing well.
Get past a mistake -
If you do happen to make a mistake, don’t dwell on one you made
earlier in the song. Often audience members and judges watch for
how the singer reacts to his or her own mistakes. Will you start a
domino effect or will you try harder to win back everyone’s faith in
your singing ability? Thinking too much about mistakes leads you
to make more. Realize you’re human and that even the stars aren’t
always perfect during live performances.
