Confessions of a Karaoke Jones: Part 1
- by Les Goldberg
Tuesday was an exceptionally, unexceptional day. I got
up for work, and kept busy throughout the day. At about
3PM, the twitching started. Karaoke tonight. 9PM.
Brandy’s Tavern, Lakewood, NJ. DJ Dave. Should I
eat? Should I shower? What will I wear? What will I
sing?
I left work at 6 that evening. Went home, worked out.
Time was passing very slowly.
I turned on the Yankee game. I started pacing, wondering
if it was too early to leave. Brandy’s was only
twenty minutes away, but I could drive slowly.
I had a strange thought…. Could I skip a night? After
all, I did go to Bilow’s the night before, and that satisfied
my Karaoke Jones (a.k.a. addiction)…for a while.
It’s now 8:30. Should I go? Who’s there? Who’s singing
first? 9:00. I could still make it with plenty of time to
sing. 9:20. I could get there by 9:40. Now I’m sweating,
watching bad TV, biting my nails.
I’ll see how I feel in an hour….after all Brandy’s has
Karaoke on Tues & Weds. Only 24 hours to go…what
should I wear? What should I sing?
