Music mama gets surprise with “Duets”
- by Janette Bubb - A Writer from Helium.com
It was Mother's day, and with that my son knew I'd love
anything to do with music for a gift. I received a DVD titled
"Duets". Unfortunately it took me a little while to watch,
due to being so busy with my work. Yet how delighted I
was when I finally sat down to enjoy it. Well perhaps the
work "enjoy" is an understatement, I was simply ensnared
from the beginning to end.
Paul Giamatii showed such excellent vocal talent. Particularly when he and Andre Braugher (who played the role of
Reggie Kane) sang their duet, titled "Try a little tenderness”. They surely complimented each other, with their
perfectly controlled harmonies. Pitch and timing was excellent, thus giving the performance the "tenderness" it needed
for a song of the same title.
A master of song indeed, Reggie sings as a novice, yet he
is far from this in reality. Yet he plays the part of an
undiscovered talent. The song "Freebird" was sung within
his karaoke scene. Presenting the song a cappella style, for
the karaoke finals, surely showed that his vocal ability
needed no accompanying instruments. This was such a
controlled, melodic, brilliant performance. Which thrilled
the audience within the film, (you can't help but see this in
their faces.) as well as me, as I was sitting watching this
from home. This song would top the charts if it were ever
to be released.
Ricky Dean (Huey Lewis) also showed his vocal abilities so
well. He certainly grabs the emotions as he sings. One feels
the sincerity and depth of each and every word he sings.
Such an eerie hauntingly lovely voice he has. I was left
feeling rather emotional after listening to his segment. He'd
certainly be worth paying to hear.
Suzie Loomis (Mario Bellow) was so hot in her role. She
was sexy as all hell, yet at times she was clearly displaying
such a hard interior.
(Particularly, with her focus
on winning the karaoke competition.) Her voice is sweet,
and clear, gently and smoothly
she showed her talent when
singing "I can't make you love me." What a gifted singer
she is, with such an unstrained voice. Her vocal projection
was so good, so too was her microphone technique and
pitch. Such a born entertainer she is, I thought she was
awesome in her role.
Yet I was most surprised when Gwyneth Paltro took to the
stage with microphone in hand. I must say I was a little
dubious about her capabilities, yet all I could do was grin
so wide. She certainly put aside my doubts, damn that
woman is good! The film showed her as Liv, attempting to
rekindle the father and daughter bond, which she was
missing so much. Her raw emotions throughout her numerous vocal segments was portrayed so well. She certainly
"feels" her songs, and sings them with zest, right from the
inner core of herself. That's what separates a good singer
from the average (relating to the lyrics.) Her duet with Huey
Lewis was so sweet, her soft voice accompanying his so
well.
Gwyneth's father would be so proud of his little girl, and in
return Gwyneth should return the same. Bruce her father,
produced the film prior to succumbing to throat cancer in
the year 2003. A must see film. 10/10
